Let's Discuss Rates- The difficult conversation about money every self-employed artist needs to have. -The Cost of Hair and Makeup

I recently read a Reddit thread where someone criticized a makeup artist for charging $3,000 to provide wedding glam. The artist was required to fly to the destination and dedicate three days to the job. While many commenters called the price outrageous, my reaction as an artist was the opposite—I thought it was fair, if not on the low side.
It reminded me that people often judge a service based on their personal budget rather than its actual market value. When evaluating whether a vendor's pricing is fair, the first step is to compare quotes from professionals with similar experience, quality, and reputation. Then ask why one vendor charges more—or less—than another.
Experience matters. Someone with 20+ years in their craft will naturally command a different rate than someone with two. You're not just paying for time; you're paying for expertise, reliability, equipment, and the ability to consistently deliver exceptional results. This real cost of hair and makeup includes all of this.
There's a reason the saying goes: Fast, Good, Cheap—pick two. If you want high-quality work on a tight timeline, expect to pay for the years of experience and investment that make it possible. If price is the priority, you'll likely compromise on quality or turnaround time.
Instead of criticizing an artist's rates, consider whether their services align with your priorities and budget. More often than not, it's not that the pricing is unfair—it's simply not the right fit for your needs, and that is ok.
